Amphitheater
This design for a new open-air amphitheater combines sculpted earth forms for the seating and stage with a lightweight, transparent fabric roof to extend the performance season. A wave-shaped Teflon-coated fabric membrane is tensioned and supported by alternating ridge and valley cables attached to a mast by a system of cable stays. At the top of the seating berm, the fabric attaches to a tilted arch that follows the seating curve. The arch creates an opening at the top, enhancing natural air ventilation. In addition, the Teflon fabric reflects sound waves over 1000 HZ, enabling the baffled shape of the roof to function effectively as an acoustic diffuser. Finally, integrating the structure into the land creates a low profile, while the tall mast provides a dramatic beacon for the venue.
